Gender Transition Letters for Kids, Adolescents, & Adults
For many Transgender, Gender Nonconforming, Nonbinary, and Agender folks, the subject of medical transition can be a difficult thing to figure out. You might be ready to start right now, but feeling worried about the gatekeeping that often keeps medical transition out of reach. Or you might still be figuring it all out.
Maybe you're trying to figure out whether hormones or surgeries are right for you. You might be feeling ready yourself, but worried about how family, friends, coworkers, or employers will react. It's a lot to sort through, and it can feel really overwhelming. |
While I can't give medical advice since I'm not a doctor or an endocrinologist, I am happy to talk through these worries and uncertainties with you. We can spend as much time as you need in this process, without drawing it out if you already feel comfortable and confident in your transition plans. The important thing is that you're getting what you need.
Letters for Adults
If you have decided to pursue some type of medical transition, such as starting hormones or getting surgery, you will likely need a letter from a therapist. This is because many medical professionals, as well as most insurance companies, require this letter before they will provide these services. Your medical provider and/or insurance company require this letter to confirm that you meet criteria for Gender Dysphoria, which is considered a mental health diagnosis, before they will provide or pay for these medical treatments.
While I trust that you know your needs best and are able to make positive medical decisions, I also know that this process can be confusing or frustrating. For this reason, in addition to offering gender transition letters for clients that are hoping to start hormone replacement therapy (HRT), schedule gender confirmation surgeries, or seek other transition-related medical care for which a therapist's letter might be required, I make sure that we get a chance to discuss any hopes, worries, or confusion you might have about the process.
There are a couple of reasons for this. One reason is that insurance companies and medical providers generally require the therapist who writes a gender transition letter to have some familiarity with your needs and circumstances. By having this conversation with you, I can demonstrate to your healthcare provider that I am writing this letter both as a professional with competence in working with clients who are seeking gender transition-related medical care, and also as someone who has spent some time getting to know and understanding your individual needs. |
Additionally, this conversation gives you a chance to ask any questions you might have and get a better sense for what to expect.
If you need a gender transition letter and would like to schedule an appointment to get this started, please visit my Contact page and call, e-mail, or text me. I generally respond within 2 business days.

Gender Transition Letters for Teens & Adolescents
For many parents of transgender or nonbinary teens and adolescents, the subject of medical transition can be a difficult thing to figure out. Parents may have worries related to medical changes that their kids or teens are seeking--what if they change their minds? Will it change their personalities? How will it affect their development? While I can't give medical advice since I am not a doctor or an endocrinologist, I am happy to talk through these worries and uncertainties with parents who are looking into medical transition options for their kids.
Eventually, if you and your child decide to pursue medical transition options for your child, you will likely need a letter from a therapist before your child can access this medical care. Your medical provider and/or insurance company require this letter to confirm that your child meets criteria for Gender Dysphoria, which is considered a mental health diagnosis, before they will provide or pay for these medical treatments. While I trust that you and your child know your needs best and are able to make positive medical decisions, I also know that this process can be confusing at best.
