Common Questions
Who do you work with?
I work with teens, adults, couples, and families. I work primarily with members of the LGBTQIA+ community, with the neurodivergent community (such as ADHD and autistic folks), and people with alternative life and relationship styles (such as nonmonogamy, polyamory, and kink/BDSM). I also people who are working to overcome trauma and dissociation, as well as plural systems. At this time, I only work with people who live in Colorado. My office is in the Cherry Creek neighborhood of Denver, but I'm currently doing most therapy sessions via Teletherapy (see below). For more information about therapy, see the Counseling page. |

How are you doing therapy during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Due to the ongoing pandemic, most sessions are currently being offered via video therapy through a secure client portal. Sessions are easy to access, and if you're doing therapy from a PC or a Mac, you don't even need to download or log into anything. If you're doing therapy from a phone or other mobile device, there's an app to download, but it's still a very simple process. I also offer limited in-person sessions, for folks that have found video therapy just isn't a good fit. You can schedule an appointment by going to the Contact & Schedule page.

What if I just need a gender therapist letter for hormones or surgery?
I get that not everyone wants or needs to go through a ton of therapy in order to access medical transition, and that gatekeeping is a huge problem. For that reason, I do schedule appointments for clients who are hoping to get therapist letters. In order to write a letter for you, we will need to schedule a video session in order to talk through your needs and any difficulties relating to your transition. This is because any therapist writing a letter will also likely need to assign a diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria, which involves asking questions about your experiences, talking through your needs relating to medical transition, and talking about what it means to have the Gender Dysphoria diagnosis.
You can request an appointment by going to the Contact & Schedule page and clicking the "Request Appointment" button.

How do I decide if therapy is right for me?
It can be challenging to figure out whether counseling is the right fit. Each person has unique circumstances and needs, which means that each person will need something different. For this reason, I offer a free consultation for anyone considering therapy with me (and parent(s)/guardian(s) if applicable), so that we can discover if counseling would be helpful, and if we'd' be a good fit. You can also visit my Counseling page to learn more about the types of counseling that I offer.
If you would like to learn more about me specifically, you can visit my About Me page to learn about my story and my credentials. You can also visit my Specialties page to learn about the types of folks who are most likely to benefit from working with me in counseling.

I'm not 18 yet, but my parents don't want me to do therapy. Can I still sign up?
In the state of Colorado, teens ages 12 and up are legally allowed to sign their own therapy paperwork, and therefore are allowed to sign up for counseling themselves. However, it can be a little complicated to get that started. Therapy costs money, and many teens find it hard to pay for therapy without their parents or guardians involved. There are also specific types of things I would have to tell your parents or guardians about, even if you are the one signing up, such as if I'm worried that you're going to hurt yourself or someone else. If you're not sure about it or want to talk about figuring out how to get therapy started, you can Contact Me and I'll help you figure it out.

Does counseling really help?
Some people feel worried that counseling might not be able to help. I get it. It can be really difficult to know what is possible and what is needed when life just doesn't feel like it's working. Luckily, there's a lot of research that supports the benefits of counseling, and I can personally say that I have seen many clients improve their lives and relationships through counseling. I have worked with clients from a wide variety of backgrounds and demographics, with unique challenges as well as strengths. And I have found that counseling often helps people with difficulties that other fields can't always address. But it is (and should be!) up to you to decide.
If you'd like to discuss this more, please feel free to Contact Me and set up a free consultation.

How much does it cost? What about for gender confirmation/transition letters?
I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation for folks (or their parents, if applicable) who aren't sure if counseling is right for them, or who want more information before scheduling a session. My standard rate for an individual therapy session is $130, and $150 for a relationship counseling or family therapy session. However, this amount may be lower if you have health insurance, and if I am in-network with your health insurance provider (see below).
If you're only needing a therapist letter for gender affirming surgery or other medical care, we'll need to schedule a 1-hour session during which we'll go through the process together. The cost for this is the same as for a counseling session.
Counseling sessions are generally about 55 minutes, unless otherwise arranged. The cost for less than one hour or for other related services (such as phone calls with parents) is prorated in 15 minute increments.
My rate for professional consultation matches my counseling session cost at $130 per hour, and is prorated in 15 minute increments. My rate for professional presentation and training varies by location, travel requirements, duration of training, number of participants, and day of the week. Please Contact Me for further information.

Do you accept health insurance?
Yes! I am able to bill insurance for most clients whose health insurance plans are with Cigna/Evernorth, Anthem, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United/UMR, Kaiser/Beacon/Carelon, and Aetna. I can also bill Colorado Medicaid for most clients living in the Denver metro area.
If you have a different insurance company that offers reimbursement for out-of-network mental health services, I am also happy to provide the necessary paperwork for your insurance company to provide out-of-network reimbursement. Please check with your insurance company to determine their requirements for this type of reimbursement.
